The first play on stage before an audience in dlr Mill Theatre since the pandemic restrictions began. Shakespeare’s play, centred on Othello’s passionate love for Desdemona, brings its happy beginning to a tragic end when deceitful Iago brings about the death of the once loving husband and wife and ultimately his own demise.
As the pandemic restrictions continued throughout 2021, Mill Productions added to its series of online video drama projects to support the teaching of Shakespeare plays in schools. This project on ‘Romeo and Juliet’, for senior cycle school students studying the Leaving Certificate English course, was recorded at dlr Mill Theatre in Dundrum in the second half of 2021.
In February 2021, Mill Productions launched a series of five short videos on Shakespeare’s ‘King Lear’ for senior cycle school students studying for Leaving Certificate English. Recorded at the dlr Mill Theatre in Dundrum at the end of 2020, the director and three actors look at key scenes from the play, focusing on analysis, rehearsal and performance.

This year’s Shakespeare tragedy for the Leaving Certificate is ‘Othello’, the story of many mixed emotions, from passion and reason to love, hate, jealousy and envy. The prince living in Venice, as an ambassador of the Moors, is tricked by his officer, Iago, into believing that his wife Desdemona is having an affair with his Lieutenant Cassio.
Originally produced in October 1992, this production, directed by Geoff O’Keeffe, was presented in the Mill Theatre and on tour in several venues around Ireland, in September 2013.
