Gerard is an architect and designer, who has worked in the field of set design since 1990. He has designed the four shows staged by Mill Productions each year since 2013.

He has written plays for radio, has lectured and facilitated set design workshops in UCD and Dublin City Council, and he has published widely on the subject of drama and set design.

His theatre work has been seen in France, South America and here at home in the Crypt, the Project, Andrews Lane, Samuel Beckett Centre, the Hawkswell, the Granary, and Garter Lane.

Other design work has included At the Black Pigs Dyke (2008) A Christmas Carol (2011) Charlie’s Aunt (2012), Present Laughter (2013), Blithe Spirit (2014), Pride and Prejudice (2016), Of Mice and Men (2017) and Great Expectations (2019).

He was an All Ireland Best Set nominee in 2009 (The Great Hunger, directed by Geoff O’Keefe). Also with Geoff, he designed On Baile’s Strand, at the Abbey Theatre (2004).

His radio play Squabble Squat Squawk! won an RTÉ New Writing award and was broadcast, as was his play Two Commuters.
